I grew up having three artist parents and have been going to museums since I was tiny. The two volumes of this book are some of my musings on museums from 2004 to 2018. The images are in roughly chronological order, with Museum 1 going up to 2012 and this book going from 2013 to 2018. My father, Robert Rauschenberg, grew up in Port Arthur, Texas. While in the Navy, on leave in Los Angeles, he wandered into the Huntington Library, and found himself looking at Blue Boy and Pinkie. He knew those images from the backs of his mother’s playing cards but it was only at that moment that he suddenly realized that they were objects that someone had made: “This was my first encounter with art as art.... somebody actually MADE those paintings....(it) was the first time I realized you could be an artist.” That museum changed his life (and mine, obviously) in the best possible way.
